Steps by step for the Melukat Ritual at Tirta Empul
Tirta Empul
is a sacred Hindu water temple in Tampaksiring village, Bali - Indonesia. It is
a significant cultural and spiritual site, known for its holy spring water,
which is believed to have purifying properties.
The name Tirta Empul means "holy water spring" in Balinese. This
place is usually known for the cleansing ritual or “Melukat” where we can bath in the spring water for
spiritual purification and to wash away negativity. Each spout in the bathing
pools serves a specific ritual purpose.
When participating in melukat (the
purification ritual) at Tirta Empul, preparing properly and following cultural
and spiritual practices is important.
The Melukat Ritual
activities steps at Tirta Empul:
1.
Prepare Offerings and Pray
Before entering the purification pools, offer prayers at the
temple’s main shrine.
Place your Canang Sari or Pejati at the altar
as a gesture of gratitude and respect.
2.
Enter the Pool with Respect
Step into the water slowly and mindfully, as it is considered
sacred.
Start at the first spout (fountain) and proceed in sequence,
moving from left to right. Skip certain spouts if they are designated for
specific purposes (e.g., funerary rites).
3.
Purify Yourself
At each fountain, wash your face, rinse your head, and drink
the water (if appropriate) three times. This is symbolic of cleansing the body,
mind, and soul.
4.
Focus on Intention
While performing the ritual, focus on your prayers or
intentions, such as releasing negativity, seeking blessings, or expressing
gratitude.
5.
Conclude and Offer Thanks
After completing the ritual, you may offer another prayer at
the temple or shrine as a gesture of completion.
Besides that, please make sure to
prepare the following things so Melukat at Tirta Empul’s procession runs
smoothly:
#Small Offerings (Canang
Sari)
Many people bring offerings to
place at the shrine as part of the ritual. These are small baskets filled with
flowers, incense, and other items used for prayer. You can purchase them at the
temple or nearby markets.
#Sarong and Sash
Visitors are required to wear a
sarong (kain) and a sash (selendang). These can often be rented or borrowed at
the temple entrance.
You can also bring your own if you
have one.
#Change of Clothes
Since you will be getting wet during
the ritual, bring dry clothes to change into afterward.
#Towel
Bring a towel to dry yourself
after bathing in the holy springs.
#Waterproof Bag
Use a waterproof bag to keep
valuables, phones, and wallets safe from water during the melukat procession.
